[little flickers of different memories come through in a flash.
an unfamiliar young man with scars on his arms talking about strategy with you, remarking that an enemy can't fight back if they have a knife at their throat - but asking you why it's always people like you who have to be the knife that's held.
later, standing in a war camp, listening to the king tell an adversary that you have orders to slaughter the entire army if he's killed, and feeling something in your chest twist as you pray he's bluffing, hoping desperately that he wouldn't really ask you to do that.
finally, seeing a crowd of people standing outside of a store you're in, and walking outside to find them begging for your protection, asking you to keep them safe and expecting you to know how to do that.]

well - by the time the third one comes up, he's reaching out, unconsciously - and he takes her hand and squeezes it tight. when the memory goes away, rondo breathes out.
he doesn't say anything, at first. just kind of squeezes her hand tightly, in his, a moment of bolstering. ]

Well, it's - I lived on the streets for most of my life, you know? And I was taught to evade notice whenever possible. My brother didn't want us to be found wherever we went. There was about a year where that changed, where I didn't have to hide in the same way, and I found people I really care about. But now - I guess it's difficult to wonder just what they value about me, and to feel like I don't have anywhere to hide anymore.

... I see. Especially with your situation, with the rebellion and all...
[ just what they value. do they value her skills? her leadership? vin as a figure, not as a person. he gets it. that's a hard lesson rondo learned, recently, about idolizing people and the suffering it can create for the people behind the titles. ]

It's different for Kelsier. You know, the reason most people started knowing who he is - there's a place where criminals are sent, where I'm from, called the pits of Hathsin. It was like a mine, and the only way to get the materials they needed was to put your arms into these small crevices in the earth located all over to try and pull pieces of it out, day in and day out. Nobody was permitted to leave - he's the only person who ever escaped. He still had the scars on his arms from it; it's how people recognized him.
[it's gruesome subject matter, but once she's done, she smiles a little as she continues.]
They started calling him the Survivor of Hathsin. He was in hiding from those in power, obviously, but - he'd still let people of our class come to see him. You should have seen the way he was with crowds. He never seemed to mind being a symbol of resistance, of hope. [...] It'll be so good to see him again.

ah... rondo really likes listening to her talk about kelsier, honestly. it's nice to hear about someone she loves, someone who has supported her and helped her so much, and... knowing what's coming, too. he squeezes her hand, once the more gruesome, awful part is finished. ]
